Coral Reef and Beach Marine Environmental
Projects
Mermaids Dive Center Pattaya Thailand have been marine environmentally aware
since it's birth
in the early 90's. In late 2006 Mermaid Dive Center was awarded the PADI Project
AWARE Dive Center status. This gives us a nice prestigious name but a lot of
responsibility in marine conservation - which we like to take on where ever
possible.
Below are just a few of the marine projects, mooring buoy project, beach
clean up and coral reef clean ups etc - have a look at the brief details and
link through to the complete pages. If you wish to get involved in any of the
marine projects or coral reef cleanups that Mermaids hold regularly please just contact
us.

| Project AWARE created the Go ECO campaign to
educate tourists about how they can travel responsibly and inspire tour
operators to implement best business practices in their local area. By
making informed choices, you can support operators committed to
environmentally responsible business practices. And, by following a few
basic guidelines, you can minimize your effect on the ecosystems while
contributing to environmental, economic and cultural conservation. Scuba

Shipwreck Mooring Buoy Project - saving Pattaya's wrecks... |
| One of the main highlights for both
recreational and divers in training is the ship wrecks Pattaya. The
Hardeep Ship wreck which lies in approximately 28 meters of water in
Samesan, Pattaya, Thailand has a lot of history and indeed great marine
life. In recent years due to it's age and divers wreck diving the
shipwreck has been left fragile in places. Mooring to the Hardeep needed
to be addressed and Mermaids endeavored to do just that... read

was devastation to so very many here in Thailand as well as many
neighboring countries. Mermaids assisted with donation of good to required
areas. Mermaids had friends and colleagues that we'd worked with very
closely in the past affected by the tragedy. A handful of Mermaids divers

cannot take things into our own hands more often. For this day - Koh Kueng

Week - Mermaids week of Marine environmental learning... |
| Mermaids Dive Center Pattaya Thailand
organized an Earth week for the dive interns. It is one thing just to
clean up a beach or reef feeling that we have done a good job - and
largely we have but there is a lot of benefit in environmental education
too. Not only do we like to play our part in being pro-active with reef
clean ups but also share good information whilst having fun to ensure that
a positive message sticks. Earth Day is a clean up - Mermaid's Dive Centre
took it a step further having a week of fish identification, reef survey,
clean-up, resource management survey and of course some fun with dolphins!...

AWARE international Reef Clean Up day... |
| Mermaids Dive chose Haad Nuan on the south
side of Koh Larn in Pattaya Bay for the latest international marine clean
up. Hadd Nuan, boasts some great corals albeit it a very shallow dive
site. The intern divers were given an environmental orientation in the
morning on the way out to the clean-up site. This orientation included
information about the local eco-system and how important it is the take
responsibility for our rubbish and not just that but bring back only
rubbish that has not become part of the reef / ecosystem... read

| On
Tuesday 24th July we carried out a reef and beach clean-up at
Koh Keung Badaan, Pattaya, Thailand. The clean up site was chosen because
we had not done a clean-up there for a long time and there have been a lot
of Thai fishing boats in the island bay over recent months. Accompanied by
a reporter from the Pattaya People Newspaper Mermaids tried to highlight
the need for more action... read

Earth Week... |
| On
15th April 2007 we did another reef cleanup as part of our Dive
in to Earth Day activities. Having previously made a very good job of
cleaning up the small bay at Koh Pai, Pattaya, Thailand this time we
decided to focus on the main bay area of the island where we knew there
were a lot of tires and other debris left by the many fishing boats that
use the bay for shelter. Koh Pai is also very close to the Khram shipwreck
- a very good dive site indeed ... if clear of fishing nets...read

Reef Clean Ups continue... |
|
As you know by now Mermaids Dive Center
Pattaya, Thailand holds monthly Coral Reef and Beach cleanups. Being a
Go-Eco dive center we must be aware of our impact on the local coral reef

International Reef Cleanup Day September 2007 - Pattaya, Thailand... |
|
15th September 2007 brought PADI
International Reef and Beach Clean Up day that is observed by all
environmentally aware dive centers and water enthusiasts alike world wide.
All bodies of water in all environments can be polluted more than we
imagine and it's our responsibility to assist in the preservation of the
oceans as divers and decent human beings alike. Mermaids Dive Center of
course got involved in the day in a very big way. Sue from Mermaids
arranges beach and coral reef clean ups monthly but this was on a rather
larger scale... read
