PADI Specialty Diver Courses

Scuba diving is meant to be fun and interesting. PADI and other dive organizations make it just that with specialist areas of scuba diving that we as divers can get involved in. As a scuba diver we might like to dive ship wrecks, enjoy night dives or fast drift dives over the corals - there are specialty diver courses in many areas to ensure that we know the intricacies and skills required for different types of diving.

To hold 5 PADI specialty diver courses as well as a PADI Rescue Diver certification allows the diver to achieve the PADI  Master Scuba Diver (MSD) rating. this is the highest possible recreational divers certification possible. The next levels in diving are the professional diver ratings such as Dive Master and OWSI.

Specialty diver areas are fun to get involved in. Often they lead to entirely new areas of diving that we concentrate our efforts on diving. Of course in order for us divers to learn specialty diver courses - there have to be dive specialty course instructors. An OWSI (Scuba diving instructor) can learn to teach each of the specialty diver courses and then apply to PADI to be certified to teach them. An dive instructor that can teach in 5 or more specialty diver areas and has taught more than 25 diver courses is awarded the MSDT rating (Master Scuba Diver Trainer). An MSDT can show that they have good experience in teaching diving and can be diverse with their specialty 'instructor' ratings. To be an MSDT makes the dive instructor very employable indeed. To be able to teach all of the specialty courses local to an area will make is easier to secure scuba dive jobs. Whether you are looking at taking a specialty diver course as a diver or as an instructor Mermaids have a full suite including 'distinctive specialty courses'. A 'PADI distinctive specialty course' is a course where Mermaids have written the entire 'Course Outline" and submitted this to PADI. For PADI Dive Instructors: Mermaids have witnessed that the dive industry prefers to take dive instructors on for dive employment from the MSDT level and higher professional diver level. Although it is possible to achieve scuba dive jobs directly from an IDC (Instructor Development Course), dive employers are more likely to offer a dive position to a diver that has more experience.
